Gardiner MacDougall is in his 14th season at the helm of UNB’s hockey program. He has helped lead one of Canada’s most successful university hockey programs to four national championships and two silver medals and made his eighth national championship appearance in March 2013. He also has a World Championship Gold Medal on his resume as he was part of the Team AUS coaching staff to win the 2007 FISU Games in Torino, Italy.
The native of Bedeque, PEI, is the fourth UNB head coach from that province, following in the footsteps of NHL’ers Don MacAdam, Doug MacLean and Mike Kelly. Coach MacDougall recently guided the V-Reds to their fifth CIS championship (2013, 2011, 2009, 2007, 1998) and has CIS Silver Medals in 2004 and 2008. MacDougall helped lead the 2007-08 squad to the most successful season in AUS history (31-1-1) as well as the most wins ever (43) in Canadian university hockey further solidifying his record as the most successful in the Atlantic Conference since taking over UNB.
In 2010, his youthful V-Reds squad including 10 first year players set- a new CIS record by posting a 27-1 regular season record, including 26 consecutive victories to start the season and an undefeated 14-0 record on the road. The Varsity Reds followed that up in 2011 with their fourth consecutive AUS regular season title (23-5), their 12th AUS championship, and concluded with an amazing national championship victory before a capacity crowd at the Aitken Centre.
In 2012 the V-Reds went 20-5-3, winning both the AUS regular season pennant and playoff championship, and were CIS semi-finalists. Last year, 2012-13, despite losing nine players to graduation and pro hockey, the V-Reds again won their 6th consecutive AUS regular season title with a 23-5 record and then captured their 3rd consecutive AUS playoff title and 13th overall with a 2-0 shutout over St. Mary’s before a capacity sell- out crowd. They then went on to win their fifth CIS Championship – 4th in seven years - in a 2-0 shutout over SMU.
In the victory, Mac Dougall became the first CIS hockey coach to coach his son to a CIS Championship.
Mac Dougall is the all- time AUS coaching leader for wins( 388) and this year will become the first ever AUS coach with over four hundred all time wins. He is in the top 5 in the CIS for career victories In 2006, he became the all-time most successful coach in UNB history with 106 regular season victories and has guided the team to 13 consecutive AUS “Final Four” appearances along with appearing in eight “Nationals”. At the CIS Nationals he is third all-time in victories and has a 18-5 record. He posted his 300th career CIS victory in January,2012.
Prior to coming to UNB, MacDougall had an outstanding career in Junior Hockey in western Canada; primarily in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, where he was named Coach of the Year on four separate occasions while capturing four League/ Provincial championships.
Mac Dougall was named the 2010 CIS Coach of the Year and is one of only three coaches to be a three-time AUS coach of the year winner. Aside from being a 2x MJHL Coach of the year, he was a Manitoba Coach of the Year finalist and recently named Coach of the Year in his home province of PEI for two consecutive years.
In April, 2007, MacDougall was honored with the special UNB President’s Citation Award by UNB University President John MacLaughlan. In March, 2009 President MacLaughlan awarded him with the UNB President’s Medal - UNB’s most prestigious recognition. He was the first coach in UNB history to be awarded such honors.
In 2010 he was awarded the distinguished Paul Harris Fellowship medallion by the Fredericton Rotary club for his outstanding community service work. Recently, he was the first CIS coach to be awarded the prestigious Queens Diamond Jubilee Medal for his important contribution to the Fredericton hockey community.
Aside from a successful on-ice coaching record, Coach MacDougall’s background as an educator has helped UNB student athletes achieve strong academic performances. The past thirteen years, 142 players have achieved at least one term of a 3.0 Grade Point Average while a remarkable 79 players have achieved Academic All-Canadian status including a team record of 11 in 2011-12.
A keen promoter of community development, UNB’s numerous hockey development programs reach over 1,000 minor hockey players on an annual basis. This includes the elite V-Reds Prospects Program that has become known as the top development program in Atlantic Canada. Over 30 Prospects’ grads have been drafted to the NHL.
MacDougall will add to his international experience this season as he will be the Head Coach for the Team AUS who will represent Canada at the 2013 FISU in Trento, Italy. Last season, Mac Dougall was a guest of the Russian Hockey Federation to the World Junior Club Championships in Omsk, Russia and helped set up a Russian All Star team at the V-Reds annual Pete Kelly Cup .
Gardiner resides in New Maryland with wife Lee, Taylor, a forward with the V-Reds after a five-year QMJHL career and Madison, a second year UNB student.
