Brad Woodside was born in Fredericton and began public speaking in his early twenties through the Junior Chamber of Commerce, advancing to join Toastmasters to master his skill of competitive speaking. He has participated internationally in public speaking competitions, resulting in being awarded over 35 plaques and trophies.
Brad Woodside was first elected to City Council in 1981. After two terms as councillor, he was elected Mayor in 1986, serving five straight terms before resigning in 1999. He was returned as Mayor in 2004 and on May 14, 2012, was re-elected for a record eighth term to become the longest serving Mayor of Fredericton. Mayor Woodside has an Honourary Doctor of Laws from St. Thomas University and is currently the First Vice-President for the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.
Mayor Woodside has spoken many times on the subject of youth substance abuse, including conferences in Israel, France and Italy. In recent years, Mayor Woodside travelled abroad to China and Korea to promote immigration. He is married to the former Anne Sneyd and they enjoy spending time with their children.
